Sylvia Plath draws as into Esther’s suffering with such intimacy and force that Esther’s insanity begins to feel like a real and even rational experience. The book was a significant milestone in underlining the importance of speaking openly and truthfully about mental illness, especially in the case of women in the 20th century, a time when such subjects were considered taboo.
